Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.
This week we will be looking at the top 10 selling games in June 2013. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling games of the first half of 2013 and the week before that the top 10 Xbox 360 games (Updated to first half of 2013).
Looking at the top 10 bestselling games in June 2013, two games, The Last of Us (PS3) and Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS), sold well and beyond the rest. Those two games sold more than the other eight games in the top 10 combined. The two games sold a combined 3.19 million units, while the other eight games sold a combined 1.95 million units.
Three of the top 10 games were new releases in June 2013. Also six of the top 10 games were released in 2013 and four in 2012. The three titles released in June 2013 sold a combined 2.66 million units or 0.89 million units on average per title. The six titles released in 2013 sold a combined 3.55 million units or 0.59 million units on average per title. The four titles released in 2012 sold a combined 1.59 million units or 0.40 million units on average per title.
The top 10 bestselling games in June 2013 sold a combined 5.14 million units. The top title topped two million units sold, while the top two titles sold more than one million units. The top eight titles sold more than 200,000 units, while the entire top 10 sold more than 150,000 units.
Looking at sales by publisher, six of the top 10 titles are first party, published by Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, while four are third party. Four of the titles were published by Nintendo, one by Sony and one by Microsoft. The four Nintendo titles sold a combined 1.89 million units or 36.8 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one Sony title, The Last of Us, sold 2.19 million units or 42.6 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one Microsoft title, Minecraft, sold 0.28 million units.
Activision published two of the titles, while Namco Bandai and Electronic Arts published one game apiece. The two Activision titles are the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops II. The game sold a combined 0.44 million units.
If you look at the top 10 as a graph, it is even easier to tell how two titles sold well above the rest. Five of the titles didn’t even top 250,000 units sold and even eight didn’t top 500,000 units.
Here are the sales outside the top 10: The 3DS was the top selling platform in June with 898,435 units sold. Nintendo also sold 130,635 Wii’s, 119,898 Wii U’s and 63,670 DS’s. Sony sold 666,300 PlayStation 3’s, 254,775 PSP’s, and 186,042 PlayStation Vita’s. Microsoft sold 418,895 Xbox 360’s.
There have been 8.49 million games sold for the PlayStation 3, 5.62 million games sold for the Xbox 360, 2.31 million games sold for the Wii, and 0.46 million games sold for the Wii U. There have been 3.55 million games sold for the 3DS, 1.48 million games sold for the DS, 0.76 million games sold for the PSP, and 0.57 million games sold for the PlayStation Vita.
Looking at game sales by publisher Nintendo is at the top with 3.75 million games sold. Sony has managed to sell 2.21 million games and Microsoft has sold 0.79 million games. Electronic Arts has sold 2.41 million games, Activision 1.95 million games and Ubisoft 1.59 million games.
