Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.
This week we will be looking at the top 10 selling games of the first half of 2013. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling Xbox 360 games (Updated to first half of 2013) and the week before that the top 10 Wii games (Updated to first half of 2013).
Looking at the top 10 bestselling games in the first half of 2013, seven were released in 2013 and three in 2012. All three games released in 2012 were all released in November. When it comes to 2013 five were released in March, one in April and one in June.
The three titles released in 2012 sold a combined 5.33 million units or 1.78 million units on average per title. The seven titles released in 2013 sold a combined 10.53 million units or 1.50 million units on average per title.
The top 10 bestselling games in the first half of 2013 sold a combined 15.86 million units. The top three titles topped two million units sold, while the entire top 10 sold more than one million units.
Looking at sales by publisher, six of the top 10 titles are first party, published by Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, while four are third party. Three of the titles were published by Nintendo, two by Sony and one by Microsoft. The three Nintendo titles sold a combined 5.42 million units or 34.2 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Sony titles sold a combined 3.38 million units or 21.3 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one Microsoft title, Gears of War: Judgment (X360) sold 1.22 million units.
Activision published two of the titles, while square Enix and Take-Two published one game apiece. The two Activision titles are the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops II. The game sold a combined 3.25 million units.
If you look at the top 10 by platform four of the titles are for the PlayStation 3, three are for the Xbox 360 and three are for the 3DS. These three platforms have been the top performing platforms all year.
The bestselling game of 2013, The Last of Us (PS3), has been out less than a month. The game has managed to sell 2.15 million units in just three weeks. It is the one of many exclusives in the top 10. Six of the titles in the top 10 are exclusive titles and they are also all first party titles.
Here are the sales outside the top 10: The 3DS is the bestselling platform in 2013 so far with 4.79 million units sold. Nintendo has also sold 1.08 million Wii’s, 0.99 million Wii U’s and 0.51 million DS’s. Sony has sold 4.39 million PlayStation 3’s, 1.94 million PSP’s and 1.22 million PlayStation Vita’s. Microsoft has sold 3.01 million Xbox 360’s.
There have been 44.15 million games sold for the PlayStation 3, 37.49 million games sold for the Xbox 360, 15.60 million games sold for the Wii, and 3.21 million games sold for the Wii U. There have been 19.31 million games sold for the 3DS, 9.36 million games sold for the DS, 4.59 million games sold for the PSP, and 3.85 million games sold for the PlayStation Vita.
The top 16 titles have sold more than one million units, while the top 43 titles have sold more than 500,000 units. The top 128 titles have sold more than 200,000 units and the top 271 titles have sold more than 100,000 units.
Looking at game sales by publisher Nintendo is at the top with 20.55 million games sold. Sony has managed to sell 7.15 million games and Microsoft has sold 5.88 million games. Electronic Arts has sold 16.57 million games, Activision 12.46 million games and Ubisoft 10.86 million games.
