Weekly Sales Analysis, 20 April - Injustice: Gods Among Us

Overview

Overall hardware sales increases by five percent week-on-week. Week-on-week sales are only up for the 3DS which is up by 26 percent. Overall year-on-year sales are down 20 percent. Again only the 3DS is up. The PSP has dropped by 71 percent year-on-year, the biggest by percent.

Four games debuted in the top 30 this week. Tomodachi Collection: Shin Seikatsu (3DS) debuted at number one with sales of 406,432. The game launched in Japan.

Software milestones this week in the top 30: Far Cry 3 (PS3) passed the two million mark.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware home console sales week-on-week are down across the board. PlayStation 3 sales are down 4,662 (-4%) to 117,631 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are down 2,942 (-4%) to 80.685 units sold. The Wii U sold 32,115 units, a decrease of 2,038 (-5%). The Wii sold 28,341 units, a decrease of 702 (-2%).

Handheld sales week-on-week  have only increased for the 3DS, while the other three handhelds, the PSP, DS, and Vita, are all down. The 3DS sold 182,654 units, which is up 37,154 (26%) week-on-week. The PlayStation Vita is down 886 (-3%) to 29,503 units sold. The DS sold 21,112 units which is down 1,093 (-5%) compared to last week. The PSP is down 636 (-4%) to 14,225 units sold. Total week on week sales are up 24,195 units (5%) to 506,266 units sold.

The 3DS is the only platform up year-on-year. The PlayStation 3 is down 25,385 (-18%), the Wii is down 37,139 (-57%), and the Xbox 360 is down 31,441 (-28%). The PSP is down 34,640 (-71%), the DS is down 20,850 (-50%), the Vita is down 18,760 (-39%) and the 3DS is up 9,029 (5%). Year on year sales are down 1627,071 units (-20%).

Home console hardware sales have decreased for all platforms for three straight weeks. The increases and decreases between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have been very similar, it is just the PlayStation 3 has been outselling the Xbox 360 between 30,000 to 50,000 units per week. The PlayStation 3 has led for the last 16 weeks. The Wii U has outsold its predecessor, the Wii, for five straight weeks.

The PlayStation 3 has a 52 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 36 percent market share; and the Wii has a 12 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all four home consoles are down.

Handheld hardware sales have decreased for three straight weeks for the DS and PSP, and decreased for four straight weeks for the Vita. However the 3DS did increase by a good amount this week. The gap between the 3DS and Vita has increased this week to 153,000 units this week, down from 115,000 units last week.

The DS has a 60 percent market share this week for the seventh generation handhelds, while the PSP has a 40 percent market share. The 3DS has an 86 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 14 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the Vita us up, while the 3DS, DS and PSP are down.

Worldwide Software

Four games debuted in the top 30 this week. Tomodachi Collection: Shin Seikatsu (3DS) debuted at number one with sales of 406,432. The game launched in Japan.

Injustice: Gods Among Us (X360) debuted at number two with sales of 298,700. The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number three with sales of 244,705. The game launched in North America and Europe.

7th Dragon 2020-II (PSP) debuted at number six with sales of 74,694. The game launched in Japan.

Amnesia: Crowd (PSP) debuted at number 24 with sales of 25,865. The game launched in Japan.

Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts:  Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS) is at number four with sales of 137,421. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 (PS3) is at number five with sales of 95,252.

Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS) is at number seven with sales of 59,429. BioShock Infinite (X360) is at number eight with sales of 52,642. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (X360) is at number nine with sales of 45,811. Pandora’s Tower (Wii) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 41,084.

Software home console sales week-on-week are up across the board. The PlayStation 3 sold the most games this week with sales of 1.44 million, an increase of 97,220 units (7%).  The Xbox 360 sold 1.35 million games this week, an increase of 69,353 units (5%). Wii software sales are up 4,497 units (1%) to 586,662 games sold. The Wii U sold 130,051 games, an increase of 1,299 (1%).

Handheld software sales week-on-week are up for the 3DS and PSP, and down for the DS and Vita. The 3DS sold 1.01 million games, which is up 364,735 units (56%). The DS sold 365,563 games, a decrease of 28,729 units (-7%) week-on-week. PSP game sales are up 85,631 units (65%) to 216,800 games sold. The Vita sold 101,552 games, a decrease of 16,613 (-14%).  Total combined software is up 577,393 million games units (12%) week-on-week to 5.21 million.

Year on year software totals are up for the 3DS and PlayStation 3, and down for everything else. The PlayStation 3 is up 15,637 units (1%), the Wii is down 432,878 units (-42%) and the Xbox 360 is down 312,471 units (-19%). The DS is down 197,152 units (-35%), the PSP is down 15,699 units (-7%), the 3DS is up 408,437 units (67%), and the Vita is down 5,577 units (-5%). Total combined software is down 409,652 million units (-7%) games sold year on year.

Home console software sales have increased for all four platforms for one week. Software sales between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have been nearly identical for five straight weeks. They have been within 100,000 units of each other.

The PlayStation 3 has a 43 percent market share, the Xbox 360 has a 40 percent market share, and the Wii has a 17 percent market share. Compared to ten weeks ago the Wii U is up, while the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii are down.

The 3DS sold the most software for a handheld for the 18th straight week. The 3DS and DS have remained above their rivals, the Vita and PSP respectively. The 3DS sold more than 10 times as many games as the Vita. The DS sold 69 percent more games than the PSP.

The DS has a 63 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 37 percent market share. The 3DS has a 91 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a nine percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS and PSP are up, while the DS and Vita are down.
