Analyst: 11M Next Generation Consoles Sold by 2014

by William D'Angelo, posted on 17 April 2013 / 5,087 Views

Jesse Divnich, an analyst for EEDAR, has made a bold prediction that next generation consoles, the PlayStation 4 and next Xbox, will sell more than 11 million units combined by 2014. He expects sales for the two consoles to pass 50 million by the end of 2017.

"EEDAR is forecasting over 11 million consumers to transition to the next-generation by the end of 2014 (PS4 and Xbox)," Divnich told GamesIndustry International. "That's 11 million consumers who are willing to spend money to consume interactive entertainment. Those are 11 million of the elusive 'Whales' we continually hunt in the mobile market."

"By the end of 2017, this will balloon to over 50 million consumers, all willing to spend money to consume quality content," Divnich continued. "It's a market that independent developers shouldn't ignore and one that the console manufacturers must foster to gain independent support."

The PlayStation 4 has a release date of Holiday 2013, however what regions it will be available this year are not yet known. While Microsoft has not announced its next Xbox, details are expected to be released in May.

" will sell more than 11 million units combined by 2014" see this is what confuses me. this sentence stats BY 2014 that would mean jan 1 2014; then it goes on to state "EEDAR is forecasting over 11 million consumers to transition to the next-generation by the end of 2014 (PS4 and Xbox)," which translates to Dec 31 11:59pm. That's a pretty big difference there. One utilizing only 1 holiday season the other 2 seasons. so which is it? I would also like to point out that if it really is by the end of 2014 then its really not a whole lot to be honest. that's only a mere 5.5 million each( if they both sell 50/50). which in turn means they will sell far less than Wii U is right now.

It's ridiculous whether you go by the title (11 million in 2-3 months?) or the actual forecast (just 11 million in ~15 months for both?).

Are they joking? Ps3+X360 sold 18m+ in the same time frame (Wii sold 20m). People have been waiting for new consoles much longer now and the PS4 is going to be more affordable than the PS3 was. I would say 22m-23m atleast if supplies are steady.

"PS4 is going to be more affordable than the PS3 was" .. but the PS3 will be much more affordable when the PS4 releases.. lol

.. you will be surprised !...

I think his prediction is for North America alone.

There we go, that makes sense. North America Only! still, within a year after launch, PS3 + 360 + Wii sold 13 million. The Analyst expects a drop. Within 5 years, 7th gen consoles still sold 70 million units in USA. Jesse expects 8th gen consoles to die off quicker then 7th gen consoles, and I just don't see that happening with the initial price point being lower.

More completion from other entertainment. Less a step up than the previous generation (except for Nintendo). Worse global economy. Forecast may be high.

They are talking about US sales obviously.

Only 11 million for 2013 AND 2014? Does the article really say end of 2014, or start of 2014? Wii U should really gain momentum this fall, and PS4/Nextbox should get a million or so each. And 50 million over the next 3.5 years? What for individual consoles? Wii sold over 60 million units in it's first 3 years alone, and the PS3/360 both sold about 30 million each. Do analysts really expect the market to fall to 43% (50/120) of this current gen?

DietSoap (on 17 April 2013)

BY 2014, as in BY January 1st 2014, as in November and December of 2013.

And his problem is just the opposite: That's way too high. He's predicting a 5.5 million give or take launch window for both, or god forbid something even more ridiculous like 7 million for one and 4 million for the other.

Yes I think they do. And judging by WiiU sales that sounds about right. There is more competition for entertainment dollar and PC/Smartphone/tablet will make a big dent this time around.

So 11 million in 2013, and then 39 million over then next 4 years? So what PS4/720/Wii U will sell 3-4 million units each annually? That's just as bad as Vita!!

That's awfully low... 11 mil for the first years and 50 mil+ after 4 years for PS4 and 720 combined.
