Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.

Over the first three months of 2013 we took a look at the top 10 sales in 2012 by platform and by region. Starting this week we will be looking at the sales in 2013. This week we will be looking at the top 10 selling games in the first quarter 2013. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling games globally in 2012 and the week before that the top 10 selling games in Japan in 2012.

Top 10 Selling games in the first quarter 2013

Looking at the top 10 bestselling games in the first quarter 2013, seven of the games were released in 2013 and three were released in 2012. The three games in 2012 were all released in November. In 2013 two of the games were released in February and five were released in March.

The seven titles released in the first quarter 2013 sold a combined 6.48 million units or 66.9 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The three games released in 2012 sold 3.21 million units or 33.1 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

The top 10 bestselling games in the first quarter 2013 sold a combined 9.69 million units. The top four titles sold more than one million units, while the top nine games sold more than 800,000 units. However the number 10 game sold just below that figure.

Four games are first party, two published by Nintendo and one by Microsoft and one by Sony. None were published by Sony. The two titles published by Nintendo, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, sold a combined 1.90 million units or 19.6 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one game published by Microsoft, Gears of War: Judgment, sold a combined 0.96 million units or 9.9 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one game published by Sony, God of War: Ascension, sold a combined 0.92 million units or 9.5 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

The third party publishers include three Square Enix titles, two Activision titles and one Konami title. The three Square Enix titles, Dragon Warrior VII (3DS) and Tomb Raider for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, sold a combined 2.88 million units or 29.7 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Activision titles, Call of Duty: Black Ops II for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, sold a combined 2.19 million units or 22.6 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one Konami title, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (PS3), sold 0.84 million units or 8.7 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Top 10 Selling games in the first quarter 2013

The top 10 bestselling games in the first quarter 2013 as a graph shows how evenly spread out the sales are. Only 400,000 units separate the bestselling game in the quarter to the 10th bestselling game. There are two versions of two titles in the top 10 as well. The two versions Call of Duty: Black Ops II titles sold a combined 2.19 million units. The two versions of Tomb Raider (2013) sold a combined 1.69 million units.

Looking at the top 10 by platform four of the titles are for the PlayStation 3, three are for the Xbox 360, and three are for the 3DS. The four PlayStation 3 titles sold a combined 3.76 million units or 38.8 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The three Xbox 360 titles sold a combined 2.84 million units or 29.3 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The three 3DS titles sold 3.09 million units or 31.9 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Here are the rest of the sales outside top 10 in the first quarter 2013: There were 8.28 million home console and handhelds sold for the quarter. There were 2.38 million 3DS’s sold, 606,815 PlayStation Vita’s sold, 398,260 PSP’s sold, and 347,991 DS’s sold. There were also 2.06 million PlayStation 3’s sold, 1.38 million Xbox 360’s sold, 610,089 Wii U’s sold, and 502,170 Wii’s sold.

There were also 84.30 million games sold in the first quarter 2013. There were 24.64 million games sold for the PlayStation 3, 22.08 million games sold for the Xbox 360, 8.89 million games sold for the Wii and 1.78 million games sold for the Wii U. There were also 10.00 million games sold for the 3DS, 5.03 million games sold for the DS, 2.60 million games sold for the PSP, and 2.30 million games sold for the PlayStation Vita.

The top 21 titles sold more than 500,000 units, and the top 42 sold more than 300,000 units. The top 60 games sold more than 200,000 and the top 150 games sold more than 100,000.

Nintendo sold more games globally in 2012 than the other two first party publishers, Microsoft and Sony. Nintendo sold 10.13 million games across its four platforms, the Wii, Wii U, DS, and 3DS. Sony sold 4.47 million games for the PlayStation 3, PSP, and PlayStation Vita.  Microsoft sold 3.68 million games for the Xbox 360.

Electronic Arts was the biggest third party publisher selling 10.48 million games. Activision sold 7.68 million, Ubisoft sold 6.71 million games and Take-Two sold 5.04 million games. Square Enix sold 4.79 million games, Namco Bandai sold 4.54 million games, and Sega sold 3.31 million games.

wow is that really all Tomb Raider has sold. i know expecting say 5 mil combined is abit much but with the insane amount of advertising and the amazing game it is its reasonable to expect more

Sony edging MS in top 10 software sales 3.76m > 2.84m

That's only because MGR for PS3 tracked in the top 10, but not for the 360. This says nothing about the state of the business.
