Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.

Over the next month we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in 2012 by region. This week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in Japan in 2012. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling games in Europe in 2012 and the week before that the top 10 selling games in the USA in 2012.

Top 10 Selling Games in Japan in 2012

Looking at the top 10 bestselling games in Japan in 2012, seven of the games were released in 2012 and the other three were released in 2011. For the titles released in 2012 one was released in March, one was released in April, two were released in June, one was released in July, one was released in October, and one was released in November.

The seven titles in 2012 sold a combined 9.97 million units or 82.7 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The three games released in 2011 sold a combined 2.08 million units or 17.3 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

The top 10 bestselling games in Japan in 2012 sold a combined 12.05 million units. This is 16.9 million units less than the top 10 in the USA sold and 8.73 million units less than the top 10 in Europe sold. No games in Japan sold three million units in 2012, however the top two sold more than two million units. Also the top three sold more than one million units. The entire top 10 sold more than 500,000 units.

Six games are first party, all published by Nintendo. None were published by Sony or Microsoft. The third party publishers include two Capcom titles, one Square Enix title and one Namco Bandai title. The six titles published by Nintendo sold a combined 8.81 million units or 73.1 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

The two Capcom titles, Resident Evil 6 (PS3) and Monster Hunter 3G (3DS), sold a combined 1.47 million units or 12.2 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The Square Enix title, Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry’s Wonderland 3D (3DS), sold 0.93 million units or 7.7 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one Namco Bandai titles, One Piece Pirate Musou (PS3), sold 0.84 million units or 7.0 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Top 10 Selling Games in Japan in 2012

The top 10 bestselling games in Japan in 2012 as a graph shows how three titles sold well above the rest of the games. These three titles are the only titles in Japan to sell more than one million units for the year. They also sold combined more than the other seven games in the top 10 did combined. 6.75 million units sold for the top three titles compared to 5.30 million units for the next seven bestselling titles.

Looking at the top 10 by platform six of the titles are for the 3DS, two for the PlayStation 3, one for the DS and one on the Wii. The six 3DS titles sold a combined 6.85 million units or 56.8 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two PlayStation 3 titles sold a combined 1.68 million units or 13.9 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one DS titles sold 2.91 million units or 24.1 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one Wii title sold 0.61 million units or 5.1 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Here are the rest of the sales outside top 10 in Japan in 2012: There were 9.52 million home console and handhelds sold for the entire year. This is a 4.2 percent drop year-on-year. There were also 51.70 million games sold in 2012. This is a 4.0 percent drop year-on-year.

The top 12 titles sold more than 500,000 units and the top 54 titles sold more than 200,000 units. The top 121 titles sold more than 100,000.

Nintendo sold more games in the Japan in 2012 than the other two first party publishers, Microsoft and Sony. Nintendo sold 15.86 million games across its four platforms, the Wii, Wii U, DS, and 3DS. Sony sold 1.18 million games for the PlayStation 3, PSP, and PlayStation Vita. Microsoft sold just 0.19 million games for the Xbox 360 in Japan.

Namco Bandai was the biggest third party publisher selling 9.19 million games. Capcom sold 4.35 million, Square Enix sold 3.76 million games and Konami sold 3.76 million games. Sega sold 2.1 million games, Level 5 sold 1.58 million games and Tecmo Koei sold 1.19 million games.

Wow, PSP games are STILL selling. I thought that machine was dead already.

Not in Japan. That's part the reason why the Vita wasn't selling better over there. Publishers still had new games coming out for PSP and most only started releasing/making Vita games this year or maybe sometime last year. Not enough started before release because they were still making good money on the PSP.
