Namco Bandai has announced ( and translated by Gematsu) that 500,000 units of One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 were shipped in its first day in Japan. The first game in the franchise, One Piece: Pirate Warriors, was released last year and has reached 1.2 million units shipped worldwide.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 is available for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. The PlayStation 3 version of the game is also set to be released in North America and Europe this summer.

The first game sold (not shipped) over 600k in the first week, but was generally poorly reviewed. I guess that hurt consumer confidence in the sequel. It will be interesting to see just how many of these 500k end up in the hands of the end consumer by week's end.

Poorly reviewed by who? Famitsu gave it 36/40. These are Japanese sales.

not surprised, the latest One Piece manga had a first print run of 4 million units in Japan which is an all time record for manga ( 270 millions copies of One Piece have been sold in Japan so far)

MANUELF (on 22 March 2013)

You were pretty close, the record for a first printing is for One piece 67 and it was 4.05 million, also the serie have shipped over 280 million copies only in Japan
