Weekly Sales Analysis, 17 November - Call of Duty: Black Ops II - News

Hardware sales increased the board and will jump up even more when the following week’s charts are out, due to Black Friday. Overall week on week hardware sales are up 16 percent. However year-on-year sales are a different story. The 3DS is the only platform to be up, while overall sales are down 32 percent year-on-year.
Four games debuted in the top 30 this week. Call of Duty: Black Ops II is this week’s top debut. The Xbox 360 version debuted at the top with sales of 6.21 million units. The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number two with sales of 4.61 million units and the PC version debuted at number four with sales of 400,859 units.
Software milestones this week in the top 30: Halo 4 (X360) passed four million units sold; Assassin’s Creed III (PS3) passed the two million mark; Just Dance 4 (Wii) passed the one million mark; and Pokemon Black / White Version 2 (DS) passed the five million units sold.
Worldwide Hardware
Hardware home console sales week on week are up across the board. Xbox 360 sales are up 25,099 (8%) to 354,206 units sold. PlayStation 3 sales are up 27,169 (11%) to 276,693 units sold. The Wii sold 91,443 units, which is up 21,509 (31%).
Handheld sales are up across the board week on week. The 3DS sold 462,381 units, which is up 78,078 (20%) week on week. The PlayStation Vita is up 30,327 (51%) to 89,653 units sold. The DS is up 8,818 (14%) to 69,849 units sold. The PSP sold 33,957 units which is up 4,214 (10%) compared to last week. Total week on week sales are up 194,214 (16%) to 1,378,182.
The 3DS is the only platform to be up year-over-year. The PlayStation 3 is down 108,431 (-28%), the Wii is down 268,219 (-75%), and the Xbox 360 is down 157,829 (-31%). The PSP is down 115,883 (-77%), the DS is down 115,056 (-62%) and the 3DS is up 36,448 (9%). Year on year sales are down 639,317 (-32%).
The Xbox 360 has outsold the PlayStation 3 for the third time in 2012 and for the second week in a row. The Xbox 360 has a 49 percent market share; the PlayStation 3 has a 38 percent market share; and the Wii has a 13 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all three home consoles are up.
3DS hardware remains well above its rival, the PlayStation Vita, outselling it by more than 5 to 1. The 3DS has outsold its predecessor, the DS, by nearly 7 to 1. The PlayStation Vita has nearly outsold its predecessor, the PSP, by nearly 3 to 1. The DS has a 67 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 33 percent. The 3DS has an 84 percent market share for the next generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 16 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all four handhelds are up.
Worldwide Software

Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3DS) debuted nine with sales of 175,158. The game launched in North America.
Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified (PSV) debuted at number 16 with sales of 118,615. The game launched in North America and Europe.
Lego The Lord of the Rings (X360) debuted at number 20 with sales of 81,600. The Wii version debuted at number 23 with sales of 74,400. The game launched in North America.
Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts: Halo 4 (X360) is at number three with sales of 752,500. Assassin’s Creed III (PS3) is at number five with sales of 383,887.
Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS) is at number six with sales of 232,641. Assassin’s Creed III (X360) is at number seven with sales of 232,641. Just Dance 4 (Wii) is at number right with sales of 227,917. New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 161,746.
Week on week software sales for home consoles are up across the board. The Xbox 360 sold the most games this week with sales of 9.98 million, an increase of 3.27 million (49%). The PlayStation 3 sold 7.61 million games this week, an increase of 4.49 million (144%). Wii software sales are up 398,922 (26%) to 1.93 million games sold.
Handheld software sales are up for the DS, PSP, and Vita, and down for the 3DS. The 3DS sold 1.32 million games, which is down 31,623 (-2%). The DS sold 1.15 million games, an increase of 93,219 games (9%) week on week. The Vita sold 333,986 games, an increase of 123,622 (-59%). PSP game sales are up 35,048 (13%) to 310,220 games sold. Total combined software is up 8.38 million units (59%) week on week to 22.64 million.
Year on year software totals are up for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and 3DS. The PlayStation 3 is up 1.34 million (21%), the Wii is down 2.14 million units (-53%) and the Xbox 360 is up 2.34 million units (31%). The DS is down 994,851 (-46%), the PSP is down 326,023 (-51%) and the 3DS is up 188,814 (17%). Total combined software is up 742,308 units (3%) games sold year on year.
Xbox 360 software sales continued to grow for a fourth straight week and have increased nearly four times in the last five weeks. This is the fourth time in 10 weeks that the Xbox 360 has led the software charts. The PlayStation 3 led for the other six weeks. The Xbox 360 has a 51 percent market share, the PlayStation 3 with 39 percent, and the Wii with 10 percent. Compared to ten weeks ago all three home consoles are up.
The most software sold on a handheld was on the 3DS for a second straight week and for the sixth time in the last 10 weeks. The DS lead the charts for the other four weeks. The DS has a 79 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 21 percent market share. The 3DS has an 80 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 20 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the all four handhelds are up.
