GAME and Gamestation Brand Names Merging - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 14 September 2012 / 8,003 Views

Game Retail will be merging its two retail brands, GAME and Gamestation, into one business under the GAME label. No stores will be closed and no jobs will be lost during the merger. GAME acquired Gamestation from Blockbuster in 2007.

CEO Martyn Gibbs has announced the changes will start this month and finish sometime in October. GAME will also be adding free in-store WiFi, a revamped loyalty system, a new app, and a new service that allows customers to order products from all the stores online, both physical and digital, and be delivered.

"We are all incredibly excited about the fresh start that we have with Game Retail. GAME will build on the best of both brands to deliver excellence for gamers and unrivaled value for the gaming community," said Gibbs. "For example the Gamestation trade-in proposition, 'We Won't Be Beaten On Trade-In', will continue under the new unified brand and likewise the existing passionate and knowledgeable gamestation staff will stay with us and continue to work in the rebranded stores to provide support and advice for all levels of gamer."

"We are building a bigger, stronger and more nimble business - something that can be clearly seen from the speed at which we are introducing these new initiatives," Gibbs continued. "This is only a snapshot of a whole host of exciting plans in the pipeline including new titles, formats, partnership and digital offerings. But it doesn't stop here. A big focus for us is growing our digital market share, becoming a true omni-channel retailer and holding the UK's biggest range of games, gaming gear and exclusive content, all of which will bring us ever closer to our goal of delivering excellence and unrivalled value for UK gamers."

I prefer Gamestation stores to GAME one for some reason. So I'd have used that name!

Brick-and-mortar shops like GAME are so outdated, I was able to get a brand new Halo 4 online for 53.90€ instead of their 70€.

I guessed the new owners would do this eventually, though hoped they'd would continue the Gamestation brand in some way rather than letting it die. Although my experiences with them since the take-over have been less than enjoyable. Charging me to use a loyalty voucher , trying to get out of an advertised trade-in price and messing up my online order. Just hoping they get better and stronger rather than becoming the EA of the high-street.

My local Gamestation is a great nice friendly store. My local Game isn't. Wonder what will happen to my Gamstation XP points?

I'll just echo the sentiments already expressed in this comments section by saying I too prefer the Gamestation moniker as opposed to GAME itself, until the administration fiasco not too long back my local town centre had both one of each, the GAME was allowed to stay in the wake of the aforementioned fiasco due to the length of time it had been in the local area despite the continuously unfavourable public reception in the face of it's partnered chain. GAME as a brand name has lost a lot of it's value in the last year, but Gamesation was seemingly going from strength to strength, so it's ashame to see that brand end so unceremoniously.

Game are dinosaurs in the face of cheaper online stores yet there need's to be a presence on the high street otherwise sales of games would decrease as grannies would buy scarves for there grandson's instead :)

Oh and seriously it should have been game stores re-branded with Gamestation.

I think there are already more Game stores than Gamestations, so from a cost perspective it was never going to be the other way around.
