Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise.
This week we will be looking at the top 10 bestselling games in July 2012. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling games on the Xbox and the week before that the top 10 selling games on the Wii. Next week we will be looking at the top 10 bestselling PlayStation 3 games. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.
Looking at the top 10 bestselling games in July 2012, sales generally hit a low with very few new releases. Just three of the top 10 games were released in July; however eight were released in 2012. There are two versions of NCAA Football 13 and LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes in the top 10. There are also four games that have Mario in the title, which shows how popular the plumber is after more than 30 years since he first appeared in Donkey Kong in 1981.
There are three games for the 3DS, two for the Xbox 360, two for the Wii, and one a piece for the DS, PlayStation 3, and PC. The three 3DS games sold a combined 693,326 units or 321,109 each on average. This is also 27.2 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Xbox 360 games sold a combined 585,531 units or 292,766 each on average. This is also 23.0 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Wii games sold a combined 315,659 units or 157,830 each on average. This is also 12.4 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.
Taking a look at the top 10 bestselling games in July 2012 as a graph, it is even easier to see how low sales get in the month. While the top four games sold more than 300,000 units, the rest of the games didn’t even sell 200,000 units. As a whole the top 34 games sold more than 100,000 units.
As a quick note here are the hardware sales for the month of July. The 3DS was the top selling platform with sales of 710,980. The PlayStation 3 sold 491,414 units, the Xbox 360 sold 361,504 units and the Wii sold 203,870 units. The PlayStation Vita sold 178,347 units, just ahead of its predecessor, the PSP, with sales of 177,384. Finally the DS sold 140,183 units for the month.
Here are the total software sales per platform. The PlayStation sold 5.77 million games, the Xbox 360 5.21 million games and the Wii 3.45 million games. The DS sold 2.56 million games, the 3DS 2.30 million games, the PSP 1.26 million games, and the Vita 0.44 million games.
