Each PS3-owning member of the VGChartz staff was given the opportunity to vote for their favourite PS3 games and below are the results of that poll - the VGChartz staff top 10 PS3 games are:

10 – Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice.

img442/2273/ps310hn3.jpg

Yes, we clearly have a couple of Disgaea fans on the staff roster - Disgaea 3 sneaks in at No.10. It’s a sequel to the hardcore, turn-based, strategy RPG that was popular on the PS2. In Disgaea character units have a limit to their movement and attack ranges, based on their level and the weapons they have equipped. There are also other special game factors unique to Disgaea that let you take advantage of a 3D battle map.

Its old school graphics hit its scoring in the graphics department, but for fans of SRPGs and those willing to overlook slightly dated presentation there's potential for hundreds of hours of gameplay, an engaging story, and an addictive gaming experience.

9. Grand Theft Auto IV.

img442/6398/ps39vc3.jpg

Just scraping into the top 10 is Grand Theft Auto IV. You play as Niko Belic, an Eastern European in search of the American dream, who must work his way up the crime rings of the host city to achieve his dream. Liberty City itself is a dense, living city, and whilst this sometimes seems to be at the expense of less varied side missions and a weaker radio soundtrack than in previous iterations, it’s certainly an impressive achievement. Complete with a host of multiplayer modes and an improved combat system, Grand Theft Auto IV is undoubtedly one of the biggest games of this generation.

8. The Orange Box.

img442/5295/ps38qb9.jpg

The Orange Box is the epitome of value with 5 truly great games in 1 package. The first 3 games are Half-Life 2, Episode One and Episode Two, combining to make what is often quoted as the best shooter ever made. You play as Gordon Freeman in this FPS where you are tasked with rescuing Earth from the Combine forces that now occupy it.  The next game is Team Fortress 2, an online multiplayer team based action game with an incredibly unique art style and quirky sense of humour.

However, the star of this show is surely Portal. Companion Cubes, GLaDOS and the promise of cake anyone? You play as a test subject at the Aperture Science Centre. With the portal gun in hand you must work your way through nineteen levels of puzzles, but with each stage successfully completed GLaDOS becomes more and more anxious, her robotic voice turning from gentle humour and bribes to threats of violence against you and your Companion Cube. It’s not just the puzzles and the ingenious portal gun that make Portal such a great game; it has a claim to some of the best dialogue in a game, even if it is just one long monologue. GLaDOS, the sinister AI behind events in the game is one of the most entertaining and humorous characters in the gaming world. Portal is packed full of personality and wit, it’s just a damn shame it’s so short.

7. MotorStorm.

img442/7106/ps37kr0.jpg

At 7th , and just missing out on the 6th spot, is MotorStorm. Choose from seven vehicle types, varying from dirt bikes to powerful big rigs, and destroy anything that gets in your way in an anything goes sprint to the finish line. Featuring Real-Time Deforming Terrain (where the terrain literally gets torn up with each passing vehicle), advanced particle effects (which cause debris and mud to "stick" to each vehicle) and life-like vehicle damage that allows for spectacular crashes. All of this combines to make MotorStorm a joy to watch and play.

Initially low on content MotorStorm was certainly short and sweet, but with extra features added over time in the form of downloadable content the game continued to evolve beyond its initial launch, so as to remain one of the PS3’s best titles. With the sequel promising ‘bigger and better’, it’s easy to see why MotorStorm: Pacific Rift is so eagerly anticipated.

6. Resistance: Fall of Man.

img291/1192/ps36ki1.jpg

In Resistance: Fall of Man, the U.S. and Britain band together in a last-ditch effort to save Europe and Asia from a horrific scourge. In mere decades, the Chimera have overrun Russia and all of Europe. Humanity’s hope for survival is slim, and the tide of the battle rests on the shoulders of *gasp* your character, Sgt. Nathan Hale.

In addition to a well designed single player campaign, the game features co-op, split screen multiplayer and highly customizable online gameplay. The graphics, sound, story, gameplay and online features are all excellent, which is an incredible accomplishment for a launch game.

5. Warhawk.

img82/2704/ps35rp4.jpg

Warhawk allows you get to engage in all-out war fought both on the ground and in the skies – you choose whether to take part in frantic aerial combat, intense infantry skirmishes or all out armoured assaults. Warhawk features a vast selection of weaponry and upgrades for both air and ground units, as well as a wide range of maps and game modes, all of which combines to make Warhawk an immersive and complete multiplayer experience. Additional downloadable packs have also added a wealth of extra content to the game. With some of the best graphics available from a PSN title and some of the best online multiplayer gameplay available on the PS3, Warhawk is an excellent addition to the PS3’s library.

4. Call of Duty 4.

img221/9315/ps34os8.jpg

In a genre packed to overflowing with games, and a series many felt was turning stale like the Medal of Honour series before it, it really speaks volumes that this game is so highly acclaimed. Turning its back on the World War 2 setting of previous games, whilst retaining the flawless control system that made those games so good, Call of Duty 4 opts for the battlefields of modern warfare. And those battlefields are certainly varied – from the desert slums of the middle east to the propaganda station of a terrorist group, from the frozen fields of Russia to a nuclear base, from a ship adrift at sea to an AC-130 gunship raining down bombs on what look like ragdolls, or from an eerily deserted residential complex in the aftermath of Chernobyl to the stunning vision of what it’s actually like to be caught in the middle of a nuclear explosion. The single player campaign is short, but that’s a good thing - gone is the backtracking, filler and repetition of previous Call of Duty games, all that remains are the very best bits.

Even if that short single player campaign is an issue for you, there’s plenty to do online. With what is arguably the best competitive online system so far this generation, Call of Duty 4 introduces the RPG elements of experience points and item acquiring to the multiplayer experience. Over time you’ll level up, unlock new items and attributes, and build a character around your own style of play. When this is added to a huge number of maps inspired by the single player campaign, as well as several different addictive modes, it’s easy to see why Call of Duty 4 is so highly praised.

3. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of Patriots.

img221/3307/ps33hv8.jpg

The biggest PS3 exclusive of 2008 comes in at No.3. The latest chapter in Hideo Kojima's legendary tactical espionage action series sees an aged Solid Snake in the middle of a futuristic battlefield complete with the new Octocamo and a reworked combat system. Metal Gear Solid 4 is undoubtedly one of the most polished games released so far this generation – featuring truly stunning graphics, fantastic boss fights and Kojima’s uniquely unconventional and epic cut-scene storytelling.

2. Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction.

img221/7420/ps32yz8.jpg

A surprise entry at No.2, Ratchet and Clank got in just ahead of Metal Gear Solid 4. Emperor Percival Tachyon's forces ambush Ratchet and Clank in their home galaxy. In a bad to escape our heroes steal Tachyon's imperial warship and embark upon an adventure bigger than any they've experienced- one that will unravel the mystery of Ratchet’s Lombax origins.

Future: Tools of Destruction ticks all the boxes – terrific art design and environments, superb voice-acting and musical score, loads of weapons and upgrades, and stellar platforming elements. All of which combine to make Future: Tools of Destruction easily the best Ratchet and Clank game in the series and, according to our staff’s preferences, one of the best games on the PS3.

1. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

img291/7945/ps31cr0.jpg

Uncharted claims the staff top spot. It follows Nathan Drake’s deadly search for the fabled treasure of El Dorado, leading to the discovery of a forgotten island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Outnumbered and outgunned, Drake and his companions must fight to survive as they begin to unravel the terrible secrets hidden on the Island. Uncharted delivers incredibly realistic characters and lifelike environments as you traverse through living jungles and spectacular 400-year-old ruins.

You get to experience fast-paced gunplay, use a variety of environmental elements for cover and use an array of hand-to-hand fighting moves to put your enemy off balance - anything from punches to running drop-kicks. All the while Naughty Dog's advanced animation techniques allow Drake to switch seamlessly between movements and achieve a whole new level of believability in gameplay.

Uncharted was deservedly the PS3’s blockbuster game of the 2007 holiday season – delivering not just frantic and immersive gameplay but also a blockbuster story told through highly stylised, fast-paced and seamless cut-scenes.

Definitely agree with the Staff list having Uncharted number one, by far I found the polish on this title unmatched on any system currently out there.

Would you mind giving an example of games that - in your opinion - do have good gameplay and story lines?

Forget "top 3" - Top 4 IMO! Glad CoD4 made #4 on both lists. I didn't realize people found R&C that great, I guess I'll take a closer look into it. Hopefully it's not overrated/mediocre like Resistance :-P

  • 0
milanez (on 26 October 2008)

Uncharted is an impressive graphical showpiece, but its gameplay and story are far from impressive. Honestly if i didnt know the games ps3 had, and took a look at that list i would say ps3 really has no games.

My list would say:
1.MGS4
2.Bioshock
3.Dead space
4.COD4
5.Silent hill: Homecoming

  • 0
Skilly9000 (on 25 October 2008)

Uncharted is beautiful, and also an absolute gameplay masterpiece.

But it's too short =( let's keep hoping for Uncharted 2, and that it will be even better than its predecessor.

  • 0
Thechalkblock (on 23 October 2008)

My top ten would look a little something like this. By they way I don't care if MGS4 isn't the top game, everyone has a different opinion.

  1. MGS4
  2. Uncharted
  3. Call of Duty 4
  4. Oblivion

Once I have enough money to buy more games my list will be updated by games like Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, White Knight Chronicles, Street Fighter 4, and more.

VGChartz took my comment off of them undertracking the PS3 and PSP, maybe they dont want to be exposed!
Anyways i'll say it again. PSP is being undertracked! at Leipzig they said PSP sold 41 million handhelds worldwide! Who knows how many PSP's are sold now. VG says that it still sold less then 39 million. shame on VGChartz for undertracking Sony products!

goatspeed (on 23 October 2008)

Heavenly Sword really deserves to be somewhere in the top 10. That game is epic, fun, incredible eye candy, and engrossing. Sure it is short, but that keeps repeat playability up. HS is in my top 3 of all time with games like Zelda 64 and Ninja Gaiden on 8 bit Nintendo.

  • 0
naznatips (on 22 October 2008)

I hadn't beaten MGS4 when I voted, or it would have been higher no my list, and probably moved into #2 on our overall staff list. Oh well. Just take the top 3 for what they are, regardless of order.

MGS4 no.1 with COD4 at no.2

  • 0
outlawauron (on 22 October 2008)

@ Xiao

I didn't say it was the best in the series, I said in surpassed MGS 3 in every way, which in my opinion, it did. And I've played bits of MGS 1, just never beat it.

And if you don't play online, then avoid Warhawk.

  • 0

outlawauron : so you are a newbie in MGS series, if you didnt play MGS1 or MGS2, how can you say that MGS4 is the best in the serie ????

anyway, this liste made me decide to buy Uncharted and I may be interested in Warhawk... But I never play online, is it still OK ?

PSXtreme : ok, thanks !

replace orange box with HS bump up mgs4 and somehow throw in gt:prologue and you got a list

  • 0
outlawauron (on 22 October 2008)

@ Xiao May

Well, there are plenty more I would list. Unless your taste in gaming is extremely limited, there are plenty more you should play.

And just because you own something, doesn't mean you like it. I know Squilliam isn't a big fan of PS3, but he owns one. Although, what you said was very fanboyish.

Haven't played MGS2, but MGS4 surpassed MGS3 in every way.

  • 0

  • 0
pieschl05 (on 21 October 2008)

wow... this list is nothing like i expected. This is mine:

  1. Resistance: Fall of Man
  2. MGS4
    3.Call of Duty 4
  3. Dead Space
  4. Ratchet and Clank TOD
  5. Oblivion
  6. Motorstorm
  7. Battlefield Bad Company
  8. UT3
  9. GTA4- its lucky that i even put this one at 10- i was not all to impressed with this one.
  • 0

Yes Uncharted deserves to be #1.

  • 0
disolitude (on 21 October 2008)

Ninja Gaiden Sigma is not there...but i guess being an xbox 1 port its not looked too kindly on.

And good job in not buying in to MGS4 hype...11 hours of cut scenes do not make a great game people.

  • 0
Espresso (on 21 October 2008)

MGS 4 should be top of the list. GT 5 Prologue and Ninja Gaiden Sigma should be on the list. Disagea 3 and WarHawk, I would remove from the list.

Top 6 games of forum goers have gunz in the game.

And the top 10 of forum goers should have more emphasis placed on it, imo.

BTW, i'm happy DMC is not on that list, such a boring game, NMH is 100x more fun.

  • 0
Snake612 (on 21 October 2008)

How many people bitching about orange box on the PS3 accualy played it on the system?

Staff list is good. Only things I would say is resistance is to high. If resistance 2 wasn't coming out untill next year it would not be on the list. Or at least not so high on it. As well I would remove warhawk and replace it for Rockband 2.

Some of the titles on the staffer list ( Orange Box, Disgaea) makes you wonder if some of them have actually played more than 10 PS3 games or just listed the 10 they have lol.....
As for Warhawk, had I not played it I would be sceptical too but the game actually rocks once you get into it.......

  • 0

Who voted for the trash that is the Orange Box? It had terrible game play, horrible graphics, and a boring story. It wasn't even worth $30. I wouldn't play that game if it was free, that’s how bad the game was.

MGS4 should have been No. 1 and Folklore should have replaced OB in the top ten. What staff voted this top ten? have they seen a PS3? have they played one? By this list I would say NO to both.

This list was released a bit too earlier. LBP, Resistance 2, and a whole bunch of others have yet to be released... And MGS4 should be at the top; I didn't play any of the MGS series but MGS4 still blew me away.

Wow that list isnt correct IMO, MGS4 should be #1 imo.

@XiaoMay

In your opinion it may be, but most of those who have played MGS4(including myself) believe it is the most intense/best MGS to have ever released, add to that its the best game of the generation IMO.

outlawauron : well, I am no fanboy, I own a PS3 since it s out in Japan...

And only 3 games. Including 2 in this top (Ratchet and MGS4). I may get Uncharted and DMC4 but no way I'll buy the other ones.

And MGS4 is FAR from MGS2 or MGS3... far far far away in term of intensity.

LBP is also a must; I will also get Bioschok this week end maybe

MGS4 is the best game of this generation so I believe it should be at the top. I can't be mad though cause if I were to pick a second game to take the top spot for PS3 it would def. be Uncharted.

Well, there will always be games that are left out because they're not yet released, but I'm sure we'll have something like this next year again.

they got this list all out of whack......what the heck is GTAIV doing at #9....and Motorstorm made the top 10, seriously?.....and I've never heard of Warhawk.....

.....and as a game that can never be as good on a console as it is on PC....Orange Box just doesn't belong there at all.

I do not play the PS3 much, but Warhawk is a superb game. That is the most fun I have had on my PS3.

Errr... I don't agree with the list order. But I'm happy to see Disgaea 3, Uncharted, MGS4, and CoD4 in good spots.

Lol i bet for the next one in early 2009, half of these games won't be on the list any more...

PSXtreme (on 21 October 2008)

Orange Box doesn't belong on the list (due to its unforgivable performance issues).
Oblivion was one of those games that you either loved or hated. For me it was the latter.
AC was nice for a while, but got really boring.

For me (in no particular order)

Burnout Paradise
Buzz!
COD4
GTA4
MGS4
R:FOM
Ratchet & Clank:TOD
Uncharted
Warhawk (highly underrated in my opinion)
Wipeout HD

@KylieDog- I completely disagree with you.

Uncharted is the new king of the action/adventure genre in my opinion.

It was also critically better recieved then TR: Legend.

As expected, it's HARD to fill a top 10 with good PS3 games...
