Blu-ray Add on for Xbox 360? - News

Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology Corp., a joint venture between Samsung Electronics and Toshiba Corp., has been contracted to manufacture external Blu-ray disc drives for Microsoft Xbox 360 game console. While the exact specifications of the product are unknown, it is rumoured that Microsoft aims at $100 - $150 price-point for the device in order to compete against Sony PlayStation 3 with Xbox 360 + external Blu-ray drive combination.

The main reason why Microsoft is unenthusiastic regarding Blu-ray is mandatory support of BD-Java interactive technology and Sony’s reluctance to adopt competing tech called HDi that was developed by Microsoft. Even though Microsoft managed to push its VC-1 codec onto both Blu-ray and HD DVD markets, the company’s negative attitude towards Java prevented it from supporting the former standard in general. As a result, the company used to sell external HD DVD drive for Xbox 360.

Nevertheless, as high-definition movies gain popularity, Microsoft has to support Blu-ray in order to leave Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. without an advantage of offering BD support exclusively with the PS3 on the market of video game consoles.

This is good news for Sony and a blow to MS. I would figure they would avoid the whole external blu-ray deal and get their own large storage HD-DVD next gen for their future system. Boo.

  • 0
mesoteto (on 09 October 2008)

@EdGuila ---you sir are a fanboy and not very good at trolling....please stop b/c when everything is said and done i have spent far less on my 360 then i would on a ps3 and have had nothing but fun...grow up and move out of mom basement so you can actually learn something about the world...until that time why don't you let the adults talk

  • 0
Punisher (on 09 October 2008)

Just when will they manufacture 360 with internal Br-drive ?

  • 0
EdGuila (on 09 October 2008)

Oh yeah, it's probably working of USB cable ROFLMAO. Too think most XBox 360 owners have already spent more than PS3 owners in hardware only to have to spend more and still not getting the real deal.

  • 0
EdGuila (on 09 October 2008)

Ultra short console life spans and add ons to extend the life on their consoles' lives worked wonders for Sega.

  • 0
EdGuila (on 09 October 2008)

Guess I made a good buy last November.
PS3 $499 I can play it for the next 8 years.
XBox $399 + Chargers $40 + XBox Live $70 + WiFi $120 + BD add-on $150 = $779 to equal my gaming for what would of been 2 years since Xbox 360 won't last more than 4 years due to the company's history of putting their last system on the chopping block so quickly and how their newer system's DVD won't allow any HD gaming on their HD console past 2009.

Final-Fan (on 09 October 2008)

@ Bokal: But the companies aren't giving you their products for free, they're charging you money for it. More desperate to sell = less money to buy.
So what does that say about your woman analogy? :-D

  • 0
TheTruthHurts! (on 09 October 2008)

@ perpride....MS is not accepting defeat, you have to be in last place (Sony) before even contemplating defeat.

The add-on is only for those who would like one, its not a cost requirement to own one on a 360, like it is with the PS3. Though the add-on will sell, I don't see it selling in huge quantities. Currently Blu-Ray penetration for stand alone players is ridiculously low, and without the PS3, almost non-existent. I don't anticipate this making much of a difference, its just another nice option that the 360 will have if you want it. Besides......with the money Sony is losing this Gen, a little $$ from MS, for royalties on Blu-Ray would help ease a bit of the pain, LOL!

One nice thing about a 360 add-on is like the PS3, firm-ware updates will be available over Live. Many of the current stand-alones don't have connectivity, requiring you to order disks from the manufacturer.

Phrancheyez (on 09 October 2008)

I love this. Absolutely love this. People all over this forum said MS would never do something like this, and said that MS using Blu-Ray for it's next gen is impossible..is it so impossible now, xbots? Really? Never going to happen, eh?

  • 0
perpride (on 09 October 2008)

Wow MS is finally accepting defeat? So much for all of the fanboy arguments that had to do with the PS3's pricing...

Sony would make a killing out of this, and I will be laughing out loud when they do.

Euphoria14 (on 09 October 2008)

"ooops. Sony just lost it's only draw for buyers."

How do you figure? Arcade + BD Drive = possible $350 dollars. Then add in the fact it only plays movies, not games as well. Then you got no HDD. Add that in and BAM! it is now more expensive. I bet this BD drive won't be upgradable either with FW updates.

Standalone players are about $250 at Walmart now.

How did Sony lose anything? If anything they will gain royalty from this. This is nothing but good news for Sony. They are proving they made the right choices from the start with HDMI and BD drive, both of which MS said was useless and now seem to be adopting.

IMO though, this being $100-150 really makes the 120GB HDD look way over priced now.

@Verbal.
Because the mainstream person who owns DVD gives a toss for those things you mentioned. Dolby 6.1 is enough for me. I certainly am not upgrading my seperates system for at least 3 years.

  • 0
WiiStation360 (on 09 October 2008)

MS had to go Blu for their next console, so this makes perfect sense to start supporting it now as a movie player. As prices come down, you might see an integrated blu-ray model as well.

  • 0
mesoteto (on 09 October 2008)

YEAH!!!!

that might mean i dont get a ps3, b/c i really only want blu ray

  • 0

Their games will still run on DVD though, which kills half the point of having blu-ray in the first place.
Either that or all future games will be made on blu-ray, making the add-on MANDATORY so either way they lose.

I have a suggestion: STOP COPYING OTHER CONSOLES! IT'S NOT GOING TO WORK!

leo-j (on 09 October 2008)

Wait wouldnt that be good for sony? They do own some of the rights to blu-ray, wouldnt more BD sales give then profit?

@ WessleWoggle -
"Go learn to stop polishing knobs, sony fanboys, you don't know if it will have a sound problem - They could have the proper sound equipment inside the add-on."

Okay...just ignore all the facts and keep up with the name-calling. I for one am not a "sony fanboy"...just someone who takes the opportunity to educate himself on the pros and cons of the consumer electronics equpiment I consider buying.

I guess by your logic, I should apologise for trying to warn you that this will not give you a true high-definition experience, even though I know it to be a fact. Any add-on for the 360 will be just that - an add-on. It will NOT upgrade the 360's ability to process high-definition audio codecs. Like the HD DVD drive, it will simply read the discs. No video or audio processing will be done inside the drive....all that is the responsbility of the 360 itself, and the 360 does not have the hardware to decode DTS-HD MA, Dolby TrueHD or lossless PCM. And if you think they're going to include the chips which will process those streams inside a $100 box, you're more naive than I thought.

It's okay that you don't understand how this all works...it really is. That's why I'm here.

A woman that sleeps with you because she likes you?
or
A woman that sleeps with you because she's so desperate to find a man?

I hope you won't tell me "Well, it depends on what she's desperate to do." :p

You can bet MS will release an ELite with Blu Ray built in and wireless etc, especially once they release the Valhalla all on One chipset, the Falcon has already allowed them to drop price,Jasper follows and next Valhalla. And it will still be far cheaper than the PS3..

  • 0
Thechalkblock (on 09 October 2008)

Pretty good idea. Though I prefer having all the power inside the console like the ps3, it's also good to have choices.

  • 0
Dystopian Delight (on 09 October 2008)

It's funny how their was a list a few months back about what the 360 could do to come back and on it was a blue ray addon. A lot of people dismissed it and look what happens now.

  • 0
FinalEvangelion (on 09 October 2008)

Doesn't really surprise me at all if MS does this. MS knows very well that it's been a selling point for the PS3.

  • 0
Bokal (on 09 October 2008)

It's not HDDVD failure that gives credit to Sony. It's MS changing their mind to do the same thing Sony does that gives credit to Sony.
They were right from the beginning and MS just admit it.

"A company being desperate is always a plus for the consumer. :P"
I wouldn't say so...

This news makee me lol... finally they have a brain at M$ head
Sony is now waiting money from M$ ;)

  • 0
Bokal (on 09 October 2008)

Wow... so pathetic....

MS: "Bluray sucks"
then
"ok, we lost with HD-DVD but the future is downloads"
then
"ok, we'll make a bluray drive"

It only gives credit to Sony.

By the way it might confuse consumers enough this christmas to bring them some sales.

Seems a bit desperate less than one month after a price cut though.

  • 0
Tharthesos (on 09 October 2008)

plain pathetic move!

  • too late;
  • not a full HD experience (sound related);
  • won't be upgradable like PS3 or some advanced model;
  • too pricey for a simple damn reader!
  • taking to much space as a bulky external reader!
  • 0
spidey_77 (on 09 October 2008)

Yes another game/feature which was exclusive to the PS3 coming to my 360. Great job MS. I hope the price is around $100 otherwise it wouldn't be worth it. Wow blu ray and tekken 6 on the same day. Reminds me of E3 08.

@ megaman79:

Blu-ray's market penetration is as good as (and in some cases better than) DVDs at this juncture in their respective life-cycles. Of all the copies of Iron Man sold at brick & mortar retailers last week, 20% were Blu-rays. The number for online retailers: approximately 50%.

DVD managed a similar feat about 2.5 years into its life cycle (Blu-ray was launched just over 2 years ago) when The Matrix was released to the tune of 780,000 sold in the first week. It reached the million mark the following week.

Iron Man - and we'll find this out tomorrow, apparently - may have eclipsed the million mark in week one.

Yoshi-1up (on 08 October 2008)

um, go buy a regular blu-ray player? why buy an add on

  • 0
thekitchensink (on 08 October 2008)

@SteveKishi: Microsoft said before the format war even started that if HD-DVD lost they'd produce a Blu-Ray add-on. I don't see why this is such HUGE news, except for the fact that they reached an agreement.

This could slightly alter PS3 and 360 sales (emphasis on the 'slightly') since there's bound to be some small niche of on-the-fence gamers who prefer the 360's library but want Blu-Ray more.

  • 0
Verbal (on 08 October 2008)

Hey, you don't have to believe me...read it for yourself. Here's a review of the 360 HD DVD add-on:

http://reviews.cnet.com/video-players-and-recorders/microsoft-xbox-360-hd/4505-6463_7-32138037.html

"Can't decode or pass advanced Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, or DTS-HD soundtracks; no analog multichannel outputs"

Expect exactly the same from any Blu-ray drive they tack on...all audio decoding will be done through the 360's hardware, which will mean everything will be downsampled to low-bitrate 5.1 audio at most.

  • 0
megaman79 (on 08 October 2008)

It doesn't make much sense when Netflicks is the more convenient option and especially if Blu ray just isn't penetrating the market.

  • 0
ssj12 (on 08 October 2008)

this would only make Blu-ray diodes and drive parts cheaper to manufacture all around making it so that the PS3 could get a price cut sooner...

  • 0
mr9865 (on 08 October 2008)

im on for one, it will look cool next to the hd dvd add-on if they are the same size

  • 0
Endz (on 08 October 2008)

If verbal says is true, xbox should just wait until next-gen to add it on their consoles. This is just another add-on that will take space and needs taking care of bleh.

  • 0
16-bit gamer (on 08 October 2008)

It'll do as well as all the other add-ons, Sega CD, Sega 32X , Nintendo 64DD they all sucked and so will this.

  • 0
Verbal (on 08 October 2008)

Pass on this one, kids...Microsoft is tring to dupe you into thinking you'll get a Blu-ray experience on their inferior box. Truth is, you'll get high-definition images (unless you're one of the millions stuck with a non-HDMI box) but standard-definition sound, as the 360 is not capable of decoding or pass-through of HD audio codecs (DTS-HD MA, Dolby True HD, lossless PCM). It was the same situation with their HD-DVD add-on.

  • 0
TheTruthHurts! (on 08 October 2008)

I think Blu-Ray is awesome, and for a $100-$150 price point (under my original "I'll buy a under $200 player" comment), I would snag one in a heart beat. Why not Blu-Ray......its a great format for an HD movie experience. Not everyone needs it, but at least you have a $100-$150 option if you already own a 360!

  • 0
Snake612 (on 08 October 2008)

Microsoft does not need blu-ray to sell consoles. They are doing pretty well at this point. Why must always have the whole piece of the pie?

  • 0
FaRmLaNd (on 08 October 2008)

Awesome. I'll buy one if it gets released. It'll stop me from getting a ps3.

  • 0

all i can say is "this rumor again" i hope they dont, but i guess some people want it, though it still seems a waste

  • 0
SteveKishi (on 08 October 2008)

Wow, welcome to Blu-ray Microsoft even though you denied that you would ever incorporate it with your 360. I don't see any kind of advantage here though because the games will still be using the limited capacity dual layer DVD's. Yet this will help increase the market share for Blu-ray and therefore help Sony so I guess both are helping each other out.

TheTruthHurts! (on 08 October 2008)

  • 0
superchunk (on 08 October 2008)

Seems a bit much $$. That means 360 absolutely needs to keep its price for the premium model at least $100 less than the base PS3 model AND same goes for the Ultimate model vs the highest PS3 model.

  • 0
MattAAron (on 08 October 2008)

Valkyria00 (on 08 October 2008)

Thats actually pretty good. Some of you say thats a lot for an add-on but what if you dont own blu-ray but a 360? Its cheaper than a regular Blu-Ray player....I assume.

  • 0
Jo21 (on 08 October 2008)

epoch blu ray is pricey.
the price is going down nicely, but still ps3 its a better choice since its built in and have more bang the buck.
