And if you are saying I'm a Wii fanboy, I own a PS3 and a PS2 and am planning to buy a 360 after university, so I think that defeats your points. I know a lot of people my age (early adulthood) who play the Wii lol. And that doesn't even happen anymore, and when it did it was because of the defective wrist straps which are fixed or just to people who weren't smart enough to actually wear it. I don't see how it makes anyone look like an idiot, and if people think that, I really don't care.
Plus the only thing the Wii doesn't have to offer from that list of yours is the HD graphics, which isn't needed. Also the PS3 and 360 don't technically offer all of the above as some of it is just opinion. As for gameplay, I like the Wii the best :D

Rhindle, that's an interesting point that I hadn't thought about.

I get the impression that perhaps Seraphic hasn't played much Wii. I was very sceptical at first. I like Nintendo but I felt their recent "innovations" were a bit desperate. I'm not a fan of the DS, I thought it was dumb when it came out and I think it's dumb now. But the Wii has proved itself to me, or at least proved it's potential.

@Seraphic_Sixaxis: I'll make one point so you can try to understand the history of video games.

The least powerful system often wins.

The NES was less powerful than the Sega Master System.

The PS1 was less powerful than the N64.

The PS2 was less powerful than both the Xbox and the GameCube.

And now the Wii is less powerful than both the Xbox360 and the PS3.

People don't just look for the most powerful system. There are usually other issues that drive sales. For the NES, it was Mario and company. For the PS1 it was the CD format and the exclusive third party titles. The same (with DVD) for the PS2.

But the Wii has offered something the other consoles with all their power can't (or at least don't...yet) that trumps their power.

You can dislike the situation all you want, but it's pretty much standard for the industry.

I haven't seen an HD game that made good use of the graphical capabilities of the technology. All are stylised exactly like generic last gen games but with more polygons. Woopy doo! Bioshock is perhaps the 1 exception. Okami looks better than nearly all 360 and PS3 games.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm sick of seeing games from Microsoft and Sony about a super powered solider that resembles Samus and you kill Aliens through the whole damn game.

Halo, Gears of War, Haze...Etc. I doubt they didn't get that idea from Metriod.

Its like compareing a honda to a Viper or a Mustang, just because the honda obviously sales better doesnt MAKE it better in over-all quality, not by a longshot, the logic is actually quite simple cheaper console out of the 3 = more sales plain and simple only the hardcore grab one or even both of the HD consoles.

All of you who think microsoft will be 3rd place are pure ignorants. You say that ps3 is catching up with 360 by hardware sales, well i wouldnt be surprised since 360 came out a year earlier than ps3, and many people had bought their 360 in a 365 day time period since the launch of the wii,ps3. i would say 360 hardware sales may slow down but they got a good reason and ps3 out in the market for 2 years or so needs to catch up to 360 thats why more people are buying it because its new to the market compared to when 360 got released. i would not declare the ps3 to beat the 360 or the xbox 720 since recently there has been a article out stating that the blu-ray will be at its peak at 2008 and slowly decline and rip in 2010 and be replaced by digital distributions.

@Topic: It's nice to see MS understands reality (although like Jordahn says, this is partially to take the heat of themselves for losing). For those who think Sony will easily beat Microsoft because of current sales, I agree that the figures are going in Sony's favour right now, but it's still a very tight race to be awarding victory to either.

It reminds me of the SNES/Genesis days where a different one claimed victory each year.

We can pretty much assume that Nintendo will lead in sales this generation, but can Nintendo make their next console a winner too?

I'm having trouble thinking what Nintendo can do to top the Wii and convince their market that they need to upgrade. Will better motion tracking and HD graphics make the casual market want to upgrade? I have no idea what Nintendo will bring out in the future, but I sort of view the Wii as a one time success for Nintendo.

Face it, Nintendo did fine last two gens. So what they didn't end up #1, they still made several billion dollars. Which is really all that counts anyway.

Let me tell everyone how life works. You do not compete against anyone, you compete with yourself. There was no legit point in Microsoft announcing that they will not beat Nintendo in hardware sales. It's just PR in an attempt to shift away from "negative" publicity since they claimed that the 360 will be the winning console because it was first to market since the PS2 was first to market (which was a boldface lie since it was the Dreamcast), and they also claimed that being the first console to reach 10 million shipped/sold would guarantee first place. Failed on both attempts because of both Nintendo and SONY. So they are trying to shift attention from not being able to beat the Wii in sales to trying to beat the PS3 for a more "positive" image. PR as such fuels so much fanboyism which is harmful to the gaming image, and you all know it. In this case, you compete by competing against yourself by focusing on the consumer. Aside from the Wii's and PS3's fanbase, you focus on the casuals and the HD user, respectively. That's why the Wii has flown off shelves while the PS3 have appealed to the more higher end user. Mind you I'm not saying this is exclusive, but just general statement. All companies have had their share of PR in the public eye, but Mattrick's statements are the most recent and damaging to the gamers' image.

When the PS3 is affordable it will sell truckloads. I know loads of people who are holding out for a price drop. These people are not hardcore or casual, somewhere in between. This type of gamer will buy PS3 because of the Playstation brand name, not because they think it's the stronger console.

@Tyrannical - post in context pls. Samsung said they thought another format might replace BR in 5 years but that during that time it would sell like gangbusters and they were already rubbing their hands in anticipation of the money they'd make off the format.

As for price cuts too many people are not looking Worldwide here. 360 is already below Wii in Europe and way below PS3 and its making no difference. While it will have a better impact in US PS3 is still going to see growth there on current trends.

Right now 360 is still looking likely to end up 3rd behind PS3

Is their plan really to fight Sony for second place? They'd be able to do a much better job of that if they weren't losing to Sony each and every week. Two weeks ago they lost to Sony by 50,000 units and last week they lost by 70,000+ units (including by 40,000 in Europe last week where the 360 has been getting pounded by the PS3 even though ithe 360 has been at the $199.99 price tag there since last Spring. What is Microsoft going to do over there? Start standing on the street corner and see if they can give the things away?) It should say Kratos instead of Mario in the above pic.

360 currently is ahead of sony 5million ++. according to the article the lead will be cut down to 3.5 million by the end of the year. the gap will continue to be narrowed down at 2009 with ps3's price cuts. i am not as optimistic as the MS seriously

There will be less and less room for pricedrops, nearly all XBox blockbusters already had 360 sequels, exclusives from a technical perspective will very likely start to look less and less impressive when compared to PS3 blockbusters.

I only think Microsoft has an opportunity to end 2nd in North America but I think not by a big margin if they manage to pull this off.

The Wii will likely stay well ahead of the PS3 for years to come, but I think for the long term the PS3 has a good chance of beating its sales if the PS3 stays healthy on the market for a few years longer than the Wii.

Hi, it's always nice to meet someone from an alternate universe. In our universe the Xbox has been cheaper than the Wii (with mandatory bundles) in North America and cheaper than the Wii already in parts of Europe in absolute terms with virtually no effect.

That's because their are many people who believe that motion control is a more important innovation than adding eye candy making it the only true next gen console. The others are the same old games and the sameold stupid controls withsome pixels added.

The 360 proce drop could make a big differece this holiday.

I doubt Sony could drop the PS3 price without angering the other blu-ray player manufacturers. Samsung is already predicting blu-ray to be dead in 5 years, which implies they are getting ready to bail out on blu-ray.

it is just awesome to see the little system it could and just defeat these huge companies that make os, tv, dvd, walkman, mp3 players get their ass handed to them. these companies have no clue how to make a game but just buy out companies or just buy exclusives and still get their ass handed to them. it makes me proud to be a nintendo owner for life. god bless nintendo for keeping the dream alive, and for going back to number 1 and making gaming fun again.

ahah, before that announcement they M$ and Sony said the Wii was not a challenger and the Wii a next-gen console... Now they (M$) say they think they lost the console war against Nintendo and their Wii... It reminds me Sony saying rumble is archaic and a thing of the past whn the PS3 controller couldn't have one due to legal issues, and then implemented it one the issues resolved... All of those marketing/spokesperson gyus are just motherf...people...
Anyway, if this is true future I'm happy, my dream would be Wii at #1, 360 at #2 and PS3 at #4 behind the PS2 (just kidding).

@SaviorX: Probably not. But a gen is a long time, and I think it's too early to rule it out completely. 170K this week, at $400US (so I'm told), with hardly any new releases recently is pretty impressive form, methinks.

He said this because Nintendo is all but certain to reach about 45 million units by the end of 2008. And that may be more units than the Xbox 360 sells the entire generation.

The best Microsoft can hope for is to still be ahead of Sony in NA by the end of this gen (which I don't think they will but we'll have to wait and see), but as for worldwide they already know they are bound for 3rd place.
