The Japan Preview: 8/10 Edition (360 tops PS3, DS~PSP, ToV ~113k, FE 1 - News

Summary:

Last week three games sold over 100,000 units in Japan. This week is even bigger. Four games sold over 100,000 units. Two of them were on DS while PSP and Xbox 360 had the others. The relative resurgence of console software last week, which saw PS2, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii games take nine of the top 20 in the preliminary data, has receded in the wake of a big week for the portables. DS software accounted for ten of the top twenty games this week, while PSP had three of the top twenty. Still, overall software in the preliminary top twenty is down about 90,000 units from last week to ~855,000.

Key Points:

- Tales of Vesperia pushed Xbox 360 sales past PS3 sales in Japan this week. The game itself sold over 110,000 units.

- Wii, PS3, and PS2 had very quiet weeks, with no software topping 30,000 units.

- Fire Emblem DS continued the drive in Japan to push DS back to parity with PSP.

Understanding the Japanese Preview:

Rather than saying x game for y platform sold between 20,000 and 28,000 units as in the past, the preliminary data will be broken down into charts by platform. Within these charts, there will two additional categories besides the rounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’ depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold for the week, while to the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highest amount the title likely sold for the week. As always, this data is preliminary, and therefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. The varying platform market share the sample represents is why consistent sellers like Wii Fit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending August 10, 2008.

Software by Platform Breakdown :

Wii Software - Mario Kart was the only Wii title in the preliminary data. It sold about 20,000 units. Wii Fit, Fatal Frame, Mario Baseball and Warioland are all candidates to appear in the final data with sales between 5,000 and 30,000 units but none of them showed up in the preliminary data. Expect Wii hardware sales to remain in the 35,000 to 45,000 unit range.

PS3 Software – Soul Calibur 4 sold another 16,000 units this week according to the preliminary data. No other PS3 titles were represented, though Siren likely just missed the top twenty threshold at something like ~4,000 to 6,000 units. Expect PS3 hardware sales to remain in the 8,000 to 12,000 unit range this week.

Xbox 360 Software – Tales of Vesperia debuted for the Xbox 360 this week. The preliminary data puts the game at 113,000 units week one. Considering Blue Dragon is still the only Xbox 360 game to top 103,000 units in Japan, Microsoft and Namco have to be quite happy with how the game has done so far. From the Tales push, expect Xbox 360 hardware sales to hit 12,000 to 20,000 units this week.

PS2 Software – Four PS2 titles were in the preliminary top twenty, though two were different versions of the same game. The top seller was the latest Powerful Pro Baseball game, which sold over 20,000 units. Persona 4, and Sona Scarlett Black Ledger were the other titles to chart. Expect PS2 hardware sales to remain in the 6,000 to 10,000 unit range this week.

PSP Software – PSP software was once again topped by Phantasy Star Portable which sold 134,000 units this week. Powerful Pro Baseball Portable 3 and Monster Hunter Portable 2G remained in the high four digit range this week. No other PSP titles were in the preliminary top twenty. Expect PSP hardware sales drop slightly this week, into the 58,000 to 68,000 unit range.

DS Software – DS had ten of the top twenty games in the preliminary data this week. That constitutes a big week. The top seller was the first DS Fire Emblem. It reached over 150,000 units which is in line with the GBA Fire Emblem debuts. Rhythm Heaven Gold topped 100,000 units in week two, while Dragon Quest V dipped to 72,000 units in its fourth week of sales. Summon Night 2 was the top debut among third party DS games this week, topping out at 62,000 units. Other DS titles sold 5,000 and 40,000 units this week. Expect DS hardware sales to rise slightly this week, into the 60,000 to 70,000 unit range.

Interesting week. Still, even TOV shows that, based on previous releases, the Japanese would probably prefer the title on another platform.

Nonetheless Sony really need to get some good titles for Japan out or MS will gain a foothold simply as the only (even if least preferred) provider of certain game genres.

Seeing 360 dropping already in US as clearance price effect fades the focus for next few weeks is what happens to 360 in Japan after this spike.

A 24K spike is good for 360 compared to itself, but not compared to anything else IMHO (Wii, PS2 earlier in its life or even PS3) so all we're talking about is various levels of poor at the moment IMHO with regard to 360.

DS bounces back with lots of titles, but if it is close to PSP for HW for week then overall I still think PSP will sell more on average weekly right now as I doubt DS can keep pumping out that many charting games every week.

Its not that the retailer doesn't track games like Wii Fit, its just that it has a lower market share at this retailer so it tends to miss their top twenty. If normal game X is scaled by Y amount, Wii Fit has to be scaled by Y * 1.5 or whatever it ends up being to account for the low share vs. other games. They only have the top twenty ready for Sunday Night (USA time). If it was a top 30 I'd bet Wii Fit would be in almost every week.

the blatantly obvious one they are missing is wii fit, but FF4, wario land, wii sports will also probably make it. power pros is a possibility.

really, PS3 numbers are bad... 360 beating it even one week in Japan shows how successful Microsoft are at the moment. it's going to take something very special for Sony to pull back its weekly sales lead. i fear it may be too late.

My PS3 is crying in the corner, little pools of dusty water collecting at its base. It needed a clean anyway, my lovely little dust magnet :)

If the history record of TheSource's predictions are to be trust, then then TheSource's calculations slightly overestimates X360 numbers and under tracks PS3, but those are of course just slight adjustments.

Since this will probably be the worst selling Tales of game so far in Japan ... I dont really see that happen. The only real support is out of moneyhatting, no sane developer would put time and effort into a expensive next-gen game from a popular franchise on a tiny userbase.

But its atleast good to see that Vesperia gives the 360 a well deserved boost imo.

Exactly, they have established something, though with the original XBOX, they had a HUGE debut, they sold 100k units in the first week, whereas with the 360 it was something like 35k.

Either way, we are forgetting that the 360 sales are normally around 1.5k every week, thats almost non-existent, and if it goes back to that, then MS need to go back to the drawing board. Even 3.5k a week would be MUCH better, but 5k weekly is a godsend. So in the next few months, they are going to remain high (first ToV, then IU but that isnt getting much attention, then Last Remnant, after that Christmas), but the real numbers will come January 09, though even then thats a slow month in general.

Hopefully, SO4 will be coming around then, so they can get another boost. Either way, i feel that if MS get 2 million units by the end of 2010, thats mission accomplished, because 2 million units is what you call an established console as both Sega Saturn and Dreamcast got something around that. However, most likely it wont be happening, im guessing something more like 1.2 million consoles, again reasonable, and the software sales might just be there.

I have to agree. Watching the "underdog" in Japan has really been exciting. The sales of the 360 have risen little by little each week for the past few weeks while the dominating consoles drop just a tad. Although the 360 will not be on top in Japan by the end of this generation, it shows that good software on the 360 means that Microsoft can have a decent marketshare eventually in Japan and not just fall flat on their face like the Xbox 1. While Sony fanboys will hit these stats where it hurts it is still an interesting and entertaining time for the 360 in Japan right now.

Like someone said the other day..the 360 may never beat the Wii or PS3 in Japan but it's slowly becoming a viable alternative for Japanese gamers. Even next gen I don't think MS can beat Nintendo and Sony in their homeland but they are slowly on a upward trajectory and gaining mindshare!

Watching the 360 in Japan is becoming one of my favourite things on VGC!

ToV will get a large drop, heck look at Symphonia 2? But either way, this is likely to break Blue Dragon, which happen to get around 80k first week IIRC. Either way, im guessing the highest they can reach lifetime will be 300k, that is the absolute most, if they keep pushing the bundle and promoting the game they may just do it.

The 360 push will be great offcourse, but importantly, itll send out a huge message to all the devs out there, and that is 360 users in Japan are hardcore, give them the right titles and theyll buy them. I hope that the game pushes around 50-100k 360 units, BD did 200k and that was immense in securing the far stronger sales of 360 titles compared to XBOX. Hopefully IU, Last Remnant (exclusivity and holiday push), SO4 (big name) and Cry On whenever it comes out, get the userbase to around 1.3 million. Again, nothing brilliant, but solid when you consider how hardcore those gamers are

I hope Persona 4 has decent legs. Looks like it might not be in the Top 20 once the Wii games get their data (shame). Rhythm Heaven's drop off wasn't too shabby.

Phantasy Star had a big drop off, but that's to be expected (and the sales are still excellent).

It's great to see so many RPGs doing well, especially Vesperia.

I'm happy how Phantasy Star Portable held on, though it may be supply capped. Sega said that they shipped 500k copies of it, and if this holds true, Sell through would be at 482k for the game.

360 > PS3 this week. Crazzy. I wonder if the increased JRPG support will keep it this way. Since E3, it's been a good couple of weeks to be a 360 fanboy. Sleeping better at night than I am ;)

For all those people saying Tales #s aren't a big deal...I have to disagree...The game has racked up numbers totally unseen for the 360 in Japan ever before, and more importantly, for a dying console, these numbers are very impressive. M$ is making a concerted effort to delvier content specific for Japanese taste, and while the 360 isn't going to come anywhere close to the PS3 or Wii, it might become a viable console in Japan, WHICH plays into the next Generation. Just as 360 has made HUGE gains in the console business in others and NA for this generation, it could become a console that sells worldwide for the next gen. Japanese developers will look at these numbers and say wow...maybe i can make money off the 360...since that's what it's REALLY all about.

360 has had a few games where week one = 1.5x or higher day one sales. Assassin's Creed I believe did 20k day one and we had it at 32k or something for week one. MC I think had it even higher...40k or something.

I think Bioshock went from 9k to 13.5k as well. Idol Master went from 28k to 42k.

I don't have Blue Dragon numbers saved but those three suggest the precedent is there for a 360 games to have "big" legs for the size of its user base if an important/exclusive game is released.

Ot: Wow! Somehow, I feel kind of sad inside. I mean, I'm happy for the 360. I may get one if it takes more exclusives and rpgs. But, to see Sony get beat in their own home by a Non Japanese console makes me feel kind of sad for them honestly.

Anyone realizes how the 3rf console of a company always messes up things for a console? (n64, saturn, now ps3?) I really can't put Microsoft into this since their 1st console was a messup, and they may be the only console makers in history to have their 3rd system not mess up anything for them.

Big question for TheSource:

Are you tracking the 10,000 bundles that weren't included in the First Day (70k) report, or not? At 113k or so, I'd assume that you did. I just wanted to make sure.

If it did sell 113k, that's great for ToV! Obviously the X360 has proven that it can sell software if it gets the right kind of game. Awesome debut. If true, ToV is a lock for 150k, and has a good chance at 200k eventually.

The same thing happens with ace combat:fires of liberation on 360, it sell more hardware on the 360 than ps3 that week, only that ace combat sell's around 85,000 units first week

After following this site 4 more than a year i finally made an account, 1st post of (hopefully) many.

Im looking 4 Diomedes, has anybody seen that guy lately??? I'd be happy to know what he thinks about this (X360>Ps3) although its only preview and things can change....I think nobody thought of X360 being so close to ps3 a year ago.

Good for the DS finally getting even with the PSP, despite saturation.

43k after a 70k first day would represent a higher than normal rest of the week for a 360 game. Was the 360 bundle with the game only 10k or was there more sent?
