by VGChartz Staff , posted on 13 June 2008 / 2,483 Views

All-in-one version this month.  Go for it:  Rate that spin!

NPD Figures Show Strong Consumer Response to Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit

Two Nintendo video games designed to appeal to both novice and expert gamers posted healthy numbers in the May sales charts, according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks sales of video game products in the United States. Mario Kart® Wii and Wii Fit finished No. 2 and No. 3 for the month, demonstrating continued consumer response to new controls and experiences.

The Wii Wheel and Wii Balance Board accessories make game play fun for new gamers while presenting new challenges for those who have been playing a long time, said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of Americas executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. The diversity of the seven Nintendo games represented in NPDs top 10 for May demonstrates how Nintendo has something for everyone.

Other highlights from NPDs May U.S. sales report include:

  • Wii (675,089 sold) and Nintendo DS (452,608 sold) again emerged as the two top-selling video game systems.
  • Wii represented 63 percent of all current-generation consoles sold in May, while Nintendo DS had a 71 percent share of the portable market.
  • Lifetime sales of Wii now stand at nearly 10.2 million.
  • Lifetime sales of Nintendo DS are now at more than 20 million.
  • Wii Play sold more than 295,000 in May, bringing its lifetime sales to more than 5.8 million.
  • Of the top 30 best-selling games of May, 19 are made for Nintendo systems, including third-party hits like Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock from Activision, We Ski from Namco Bandai, Game Party from Midway and Boom Blox from Electronic Arts.
  • Pokémon® Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Pokémon® Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness combined to sell more than 208,000 in May, with lifetime sales of more than 613,000.

PlayStation by the Numbers

May 2008

PS3 Eclipses Xbox 360 Hardware Sales; PS3 Hardware Sales Growth Exceeds 155 Percent Year-Over-Year

PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) continued its break-out year, selling 208,709 hardware units in May.  22,106 more units than Microsoft’s Xbox 360 (according to NPD May 2008 sales data).

Spurred by enthusiasm for Grand Theft Auto IV and the exclusive releases of SingStar for PS3 and Haze, 1.26 million software units were sold for PS3 in May, representing an increase of 234 percent from this time last year.

  • 442,910 of copies of Grand Theft Auto IV were sold for PS3 in May, with more than 1.4 million of copies of the game sold for PS3 in the U.S. to date. More than 32 percent of U.S. PS3 owners have purchased a copy of Grand Theft Auto IV, a 6 percent higher attach rate than Xbox 360.
  • PS3 hardware sales momentum is expected to continue in June, spurred by the highly anticipated launch of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, exclusively for PS3, as well as the introduction of the special edition Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots PS3 bundle.
  • Popularity of the PLAYSTATION®Network continues to rise, with more than 20 million pieces of

content downloaded from the PlayStation®Store in May (11.6 million for North America), including the monster hit echochrome. There are currently more than 9 million registered PLAYSTATION Network accounts worldwide (nearly 4.2 million in North America) with more than 160 million pieces of content downloaded from the PlayStation®Store to date.

PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) continued to boast solid sales in May with 182,310 PSP hardware units sold. In June, SCEA launched an exclusive God of War: Chains of Olympus PSP bundle including the Superbad UMD and a PSN voucher to download Syphon Filter: Combat Ops, which will further increase sales of the handheld.

PlayStation®2 (PS2) also had another strong month in May with hardware unit sales reaching 132,708 units, up 6.7 percent over the previous month. More than 42.2 million PS2s have been sold to date.

Power of the PlayStation Portfolio

The PlayStation brand continued to generate impressive sales, earning $331.6 million in May.

  • Year-to-date (Jan-May), the PlayStation brand generated close to $2.27 billion in revenue, 46 percent higher than Microsoft, and representing an increase of more than 17 percent year-over-year.
  • PlayStation total hardware revenue was $133 million in May, 98 percent higher than Microsoft, and representing a year-over-year growth of over 20.4 percent.
  • PlayStation total software revenue in May was $159 million, representing a year-over-year growth of 19.2 percent.

“Leading into a pivotal season packed with blockbuster titles and unique online service offerings, consumers have chosen the PS3 as their home entertainment console of choice - showcased by its year-over-year sales growth of 155 percent. With its commanding line up of software titles and enhanced movie playback capabilities, the PS3 has seen phenomenal momentum with a software sales increase of more than 234 percent and additional studio support of delivering content in the Blu-ray format. The dual platform release of the much anticipated Grand Theft Auto IV title reaffirmed its legacy on the PlayStation platform with a 6 percent higher attach rate than Xbox 360, reinforcing consumer choice of PS3. Poised for continued momentum, PS3 is delivering on its breadth and depth of exclusive titles to its gaming fans with today's prized exclusive title launch of Metal Gear Solid 4. The media have hailed 2008 as the year of the PS3, and with solid sales and growth opportunities ahead, we feel consumers are saying the same.”

- Jack Tretton, president and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America

NPD has released its May retail sales data, and Xbox 360 continues to lead the current generation of gaming consoles. Highlights include:

“Grand Theft Auto IV” continues blistering pace on Xbox 360 platform, beating the other platform version by 2:1

· With 871,000 total unit sales in May, “Grand Theft Auto IV” on Xbox 360 outsold the other platform’s version 2:1. (May NPD data)

Xbox 360 generates more dollars at retail for third party publishers

· With $110 million in third party game sales in May, Xbox 360 continues to move more third party games than any other console. Lifetime-to-date Xbox 360 has generated $3.9 billion dollars at retail for third party publishers, or 59% of the total in this generation. (May NPD data)

· 21 of the 25 top selling third party franchise titles with releases this generation, like “Grand Theft Auto IV,” sell best on Xbox 360. Eighteen of those franchises were previous best-sellers, and two were exclusives, on the PlayStation 2. (May NPD data)

· Only Xbox 360 is providing an improved software attach rate for third party games generation-over-generation. Xbox 360 continues to lead the industry with a record-breaking software attach rate of 7.7. (May NPD data)

Xbox 360 games outsell, outplay the competition

· Xbox 360 games rank higher than the competition with 12 games with a Metacritic score of 90 or higher, more than PS3 and Wii combined.

· Top-ranking games helped drive sales of 187,000 consoles in May contributing a global install base of more than 19 million. (May NPD data and Microsoft internal data)

· Game sales contributed to $214 million in total consumer spending on the Xbox 360 platform in May. Lifetime-to-date spending on Xbox 360 tops $9.9 billion, or 51% of share. (May NPD data)

Among 10-26 year olds, Xbox 360 gets more playing time than the Wii and PS3

· As reported in Nielsen’s Consumer Insight newsletter, a summary of Nielsen Games GamePlay Metrics service (which electronically tracks console usage) from April 2007 to February 2008 shows that among 10-26 year olds, Xbox 360 gets on average over twice the game play as the Wii with younger gamers, likely due to a record software attach and a blockbuster games library. The Xbox 360 gets roughly 75 hours of use per month. Wii users spent just 35 hours per month gaming during the same time period.

· Xbox 360 gamers in this age range also play more than their counterparts on PS3, who spend about 53 hours per month gaming.

Xbox 360: E3 bound

· Last month we showcased an all-star lineup of games including “Gears of War 2,” “Fable 2,” “Banjo and Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts,” “Viva Piñata 2,” and “Too Human.” We still have quite a few aces left up our sleeve; see you at E3 next month!

I find it pretty funny that MS refers to the Neilsen tracking system, as theyre known to only keep stats on online play, which we already know XBLive has a lot more going on for it. If they did a tally of single player games and party games on the Wii, I wonder what their numbers would have been like.

Reasonable (on 14 June 2008)

I think MS made classic mistake in naming their core demographic in the spin and lose points vs other two in spin evaluation for doing so.

Confirming you are failing to broaden your demographic isn't good spin and appears to confirm the negative press that their focus is too narrow which will eventually put them behind Nintendo and Sony.

Also, as a parent reading that I'd be sure not to buy my kids a 360 if they were going to spend 75 hours on it a month rather then 35 on a Wii! That's actually not a great number to trumpet with current negative mood vs videogaming keeping kids from playing outdoors, etc. Although it is more likely the 15/16 year olds hitting that number than the 10 year olds.

Nintendo spin gentle although as noted they ignore GTA IV - but then it isn't on their platform and it had zero noticeable effect on their sales so if anything they just missed a chance to gloat that even GTA IV sales didn't touch their momentum.

Sony spin okay but like MS fun to watch them continue to ignore Nintendo and try and score points on each other.

@famousringo

wii, 360 and ps3 is current gen now.

Nintendo has no need for spin. The numbers speak for themselves. 3rd parties love 360 as it makes them money. But microsoft needs to be aggressive with a price drop. They need to drop the arcade and elite skus immediately. There is no justification for multiple skus this includes you Sony as well.

Microsoft should include a 60GB hard drive, HDMI port and drop the price to at the very least $250. I would like to see $200 as the price point however. They could offer it in different colors. (personally it would be cool to see clear blue or clear green)

The same applies for Sony.

It will be a very interesting E3 and 2008 for the video game industry.

Good catch on the Nintendo spin, Renar. It's mild, but it is there.

I say that Sony narrowly wins out this month over Microsoft, in a shame-fest for both companies as usual. Way too much mentioning of the "Playstation family" (written by SDF?), year over year revenue growth, and that lovely 6% higher attach rate figure. But everyone has missed even better lines: "consumers have chosen the PS3 as their home entertainment console of choice" and "the media have hailed 2008 as the year of the PS3." It takes some brass balls to proclaim that in a month where the PS3 did 19.5% of the console sales. :P

Microsoft does their best with "lifetime attach rate", "lifetime third-party software revenue at retail" and Metacritic spinning, but they fall a wee bit short this month.

  • 0
Renar (on 14 June 2008)

One spin (or would it be counter-spin?) is the 'no notice of the elephant in their room'.
For Sony and MS, it's ignoring Wii sales. For Nintendo, it's ignoring GTA IV sales.
Understandable, I suppose, since it is their own press releases.

Nintendo was the 'purest' without spin since they didn't compare themselves to others, which is where spin usually shows up. Closest was "Of the top 30 best-selling games of May, 19 are made for Nintendo systems, including third-party hits..." When you have to list each one as an example, you are putting on suttle spin. (See... We have excellent 3rd party support.)

MS continues its dance of the numbers, telling us what they have done LTD, versus what they did in May, with the exception of very select snapshots. 'We trounced the competion!! Well, in one game, umm, where we were only competing with one other.'
"Xbox 360 gets more playing time ..." based on "a summary of Nielsen Games GamePlay Metrics service (which electronically tracks console usage)". Okay. 'Electronically tracks?' as in measuring on-line play? Or do they come into your home to check out your console? And it's not everyone, just those 'younger players', 10-26 (male, I would imagine, and 26 is a younger player?). I bet if they check the first letter of the name, they could massage the data to find that 'T's play even MORE time compared to the Wii. If you are going to compare hours, wouldn't total time played by all (favoring the console most sold with the widest audience) give better insight?

Sony's was nearly as boring as Nintendo. Not that they didn't spin. It just that it was mostly the same spin as we have heard before. The only new spin was the 'We are now a solid 2nd place in sales for the month.'

  • 0
frybread (on 14 June 2008)

I think it's good Nintendo is playing it low-key. Overstating their success could inspire backlash.

But I agree, they could spend more time hyping the success of quality games, if only to make publishers pay attention.

  • 0
SaviorX (on 14 June 2008)

The only good part of the 360 spin was concerning the 3rd parties. Other than that...I could care less.

Nintendo doesn't really need to spin anything, but I thought it was kind of pointless to bring up Wii Play. Maybe if they mentioned recent 3rd parties who had their game expectations met and exceeded a little more (they did mention Guitar Hero 3). Bonus points for talking about Boom Blox, its already at 200k worldwide.

Sony is still using that PS3/3/P triple effort but its whatever. At least they are coming back a little, and gaining on the 360. I feel sorry for the devs of LittleBigPlanet though. They have a lot riding on their one game. It pretty much has to create a casual market by itself.

  • 0
MANUELF (on 14 June 2008)

Nintendo.- 1/10 no spin no good score
Sony.- 8/10 the Playstation brand>Xbox360 is classic and the 6% better atach rate in GTA4 more than 360 is epic!!!
Microsoft.- 7/10 "3rd Parties game sold more in 360" that not is a spin, is a call to the companies to make games on 360 so less points for that.

Winner: Sony for the Playstation brand>Xbox360, is absolute classic.

  • 0
omgwtfbbq (on 13 June 2008)

If you just read Sony's report, you would be surprised to know that Nintendo is still making consoles. The whole thing is all "We are better than Nintendo" and not even acknowledgment that Nintendo exists as a company. I suppose even when cherry picking data Sony couldn't come up with a single piece of data which showed them in a favourable light.

Therefore, Sony loses the spin wars.

I think MS wins the spin war this month - but not by much. When Sony mentions crap like this:
"More than 32 percent of U.S. PS3 owners have purchased a copy of Grand Theft Auto IV, a 6 percent higher attach rate than Xbox 360"

...you know the spin doctors are in full flight.

Still, MS pulls in:
"Xbox 360 games outsell, outplay the competition"

...and they bold it, so bonus points there.

Actually - I take that back. Sony wins the spin war this month, easily!

  • 0
DMeisterJ (on 13 June 2008)

Wow.

MS spin was saddening.

Metacritic? ROFL.

Sony as always is the same, using the "PlayStation Portfolio" BS, but at least the PS3 beat 360 in sales, which is something that needs no spin.

Ninty's as always, is the shortest and awesomest. We won, we make profit, etc.

So: Ninty >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>PS3 >>> 360 (spin).

  • 0
famousringo (on 13 June 2008)

Nintendo gets 2/10 for emphasizing the sales of Wii Play, which is effectively a budget title. They lose major spin points for saying "current-gen" instead of "next-gen" and for not twisting DS dominance to make Wii dominance look better.

Sony gets a solid 8/10 for bragging about a marginally better attach rate for a single game, for jumping on Microsoft's revenue bandwagon, and for pumping up the performance of "the Playstation brand." Those "PS3 notsucking as hard as last year" comparisons never get old.

MS gets 9/10 for talking about revenues and how they've done very well this generation, please pay no attention to these past few months. Bonus points for trying to sell their platform to developers rather than consumers and talking about metascore ratings like some dweeb on an online forum (I resemble that remark!). I particularly liked the part where they brag about sucking a larger piece out of the soul of their young male gamers than the competition does.

  • 0
TWRoO (on 13 June 2008)

I am getting bored of these.

With MS it's always "total revenue" or "third party revenue" and everything is "to date" meaning they include the year extra they had.

With Sony it is always "the Sony Brand revenue" and "when these games come" and "improvement over last year" (particularly funny when they talk about software revenue being higher than last year)

Nintendo never really has any spinning to do, which is more boring, although they seemed to write more this month than the last few, perhaps they are getting bored themselves.

  • 0
Magnific0 (on 13 June 2008)

  • 0
Grampy (on 13 June 2008)

It's the same old story.

Whenever Microsoft starts comparing anything "Lifetime-to-date Xbox 360 has" I tune out because they somehow never mention that there lifetime is a year longer.

Whenever Sony uses "Playstation Brand" it means they are triple teaming the Xbox or the PS3 hasn't produced a figure that would stand alone. Odd that they never compare the "Play Station Brand" to the "Nintendo Brand".

Nintendo as always is boring in that they essentially just repeat the NPD report. I'm not even sure they've ever learned to spin.

  • 0
Gamerace (on 13 June 2008)

Actually I thought the 360 spin was terrible. It all sounds nice... and hallow. That's spin on NPD numbers yet it vertually never mentions those sales numbers at all.

As for Sony:
Year-to-date (Jan-May), the PlayStation brand generated close to $2.27 billion in revenue, 46 percent higher than Microsoft

Think about that. That's @#$%ing horrible. Why 'Playstation Brand' is 3 systems, PS3, PSP, PS2 and yet COMBINED they only outsell MS's single system by 46% revenuewise - not saleswise and PS3 is more expensive - and don't outsell Nintendo's anything. That's pathetic. I wouldn't brag about that.

  • 0
Sky Render (on 13 June 2008)

It's entertaining that they focus so much on revenue in the Sony and MS spins, and the word "profit" never pops up even once... Maybe they're reluctant to admit that their businesses are still hemorrhaging money, that their revenues are being swallowed and then-some by the expenses of keeping their "next-gen" systems on the market?

  • 0
konnichiwa (on 13 June 2008)

PS3 is doing it better than last year.... Thats what counts for Sony...And I guess X360 is doing better too have to check that..

  • 0
thekitchensink (on 13 June 2008)

Microsoft's wasn't too bad, considering the position they're in. They're getting a bit hostile, though, calling PS3 "the other platform" when Sony clearly mentioned the 360 by name in their spin on the same game.

For once, SONY wins at spinning. I say this because of:
"# Year-to-date (Jan-May), the PlayStation brand generated close to $2.27 billion in revenue, 46 percent higher than Microsoft, and representing an increase of more than 17 percent year-over-year.

PlayStation total hardware revenue was $133 million in May, 98 percent higher than Microsoft, and representing a year-over-year growth of over 20.4 percent.

Why do they even need to use the PS 'brand' thing now that the PS3 is outselling 360 on its' own?

  • 0
